A member of the mint family, Scullap (Scutellaria lateriflora) often grows among other mints along the banks of rivers and lakes and in other moist places.
It is a beautiful blue-helmeted flowery plant whose name is derived from the latin, "scutella", meaning a small dish, in reference to the shape of the appendage to the flower which resembles a cap in appearance. A native of America, the cherokee Indians relied on Scullap for its healthful properties.
In 1772, Dr. Lawrence Van Derveer undertook several experiments with this species with positive success.
