A Spoonful A Day - A Great Way to Bone Health Scientific Background Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium in the human body is in the bones and teeth. Research suggests that thousands of years ago humans consumed food containing up to 2000 mg of calcium daily, which kept their bones strong and healthy throughout their lives. Today, busy lifestyles often lead people to eat convenience and fast foods that have had much of the nutritional value processed or cooked out of them. Studies show that many of us consume as little as 500-600 mg of calcium daily. That’s not enough to build strong bones when we’re young and keep them strong throughout life, and may be part of the reason that one in four Canadian women and one in eight Canadian men over the age of 50 develop osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle and break easily. In fact, the first sign of osteoporosis is often a hip or wrist fracture, which can, in middle and older life, lead to permanent disability and often to death from complications. To keep bones strong, especially for women, it’s important to get enough calcium throughout adult life. Yet this is difficult to do through diet alone; to consume just 1200 mg of dietary calcium daily, one would have to drink 4 glasses of milk, or eat 10 slices of cheese, two 8-oz tins of salmon with bones, one pound of calcium-enriched tofu, or 18 cups of cooked broccoli! Calcium supplements can help, but not everyone wishes to take tablets or capsules daily. A liquid supplement, alone or blended with a breakfast beverage, is a good alternative.
How it Helps Calcium citrate There are many types of calcium on the market, but not all of them are well absorbed by all people. Many calcium supplements contain calcium carbonate, but this form of calcium is not very bioavailable in people with reduced stomach acid. Calcium citrate is much more bioavailable—that is, readily absorbed and used by the body. It is made from calcium carbonate, but it has been processed so that each molecule of calcium is bound to a molecule of citric acid. This enhances the stomach’s ability to break down the calcium and transfer it to the blood for distribution to the bones and teeth. This becomes increasingly important as we age. When we’re young, our stomachs produce plenty of hydrochloric acid, which helps us to break down food and supplements. But as we get older, our stomachs produce less hydrochloric acid. Although we need plenty of calcium in our early years to ensure that we build the bone strength that will get us through later life, it is also vital that we get adequate calcium through our middle and older years when we become more susceptible to osteoporosis.
Magnesium and Vitamin D It is important to take calcium supplements with Vitamin D and magnesium, as these three nutrients work together. Without Vitamin D, our bodies can’t absorb calcium. Studies have confirmed that supplements that combine calcium and Vitamin D can decrease the risk of losing calcium from our bones as we grow older. Magnesium has two jobs: it converts Vitamin D to its active form, so that Vitamin D can help our bodies absorb calcium; and it ensures that calcium is absorbed by our bones. Studies have shown that good magnesium intake is connected with strong bones and poor magnesium intake is connected with osteoporosis. The magnesium in SISU Calcium and Magnesium Citrate is in the highly bioavailable citrate form. The Vitamin D is present as ergocalciferol, which is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Other Important Points about SISU Calcium and Magnesium Citrate • Available in two delicious natural flavours: creamy vanilla and creamy strawberry. Take alone or slip it into a blender drink for breakfast or a snack. • To further enhance absorption, take with meals, when gastric juices are flowing, or with orange juice, with its powerful citric acid. • Calcium and magnesium also regulate heart contractions and support healthy blood pressure, so this supplement supports several aspects of health with every spoonful.
Contraindications Calcium should not be taken together with tetracycline as it inhibits uptake of this antibiotic; take two hours before or after tetracycline. Avoid taking high dosages of iron with calcium as iron blocks calcium absorption.
