Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium in the human body is in the bones and teeth. Research suggests that thousands of years ago humans consumed food containing up to 2000 mg of calcium daily, which kept their bones strong and healthy throughout their lives. Today, busy lifestyles often lead people to eat convenience and fast foods that have had much of the nutritional value processed or cooked out of them. Studies show that many of us consume as little as 500-600 mg of calcium daily. That’s not enough to keep bones strong throughout life, and may explain why so many people—one in four women and one in eight men over the age of 50—develop osteoporosis. To keep bones strong, especially for women, it’s important to get enough calcium throughout adult life. Yet this is difficult to do through diet alone: to consume just 1200 mg of dietary calcium daily, one would have to drink four glasses of milk, or eat ten slices of cheese, two 8-oz tins of salmon with bones, one pound of calcium-enriched tofu, or eighteen cups of cooked broccoli! Calcium supplements can help.
How it Helps
Calcium Citrate
There are many types of calcium on the market, but not all of them are equally well absorbed by every body. For example, as we get older, our stomachs produce less acid; this makes it more difficult for our bodies to dissolve and absorb calcium supplements. Most nutritional supplements contain calcium carbonate. When we’re young, our bodies absorb calcium carbonate quite readily, but as we get older, decreasing stomach acid makes it more difficult to absorb this form of calcium, and therefore more difficult for the body to absorb it. Calcium citrate is a much better form of calcium for adults. It is made from calcium carbonate, which has been processed so that each molecule is bound to a molecule of citric acid. The citric acid replaces the acid missing from the stomach, making the supplement both more soluble and more absorbable. In fact, although there are many forms of calcium on the market, calcium citrate is one of the most “bioavailable.” To increase bioavailability even more, take calcium citrate with a glass of orange juice.
Magnesium and Vitamin D
It is important to take calcium supplements with Vitamin D and magnesium, as these three nutrients work together. Without Vitamin D, our bodies can’t absorb calcium. Studies have confirmed that supplements that combine calcium and Vitamin D can decrease the risk of losing calcium from our bones as we grow older. Magnesium has two jobs: it converts Vitamin D to its active form, so that Vitamin D can help our bodies absorb calcium; and it ensures that calcium is absorbed by our bones. Studies have shown that good magnesium intake is connected with strong bones and poor magnesium intake is connected with osteoporosis.
